This past week PBS/Sesame street introduced a new character, Julia, who is on the Autism Spectrum. Even more amazing and educational is their website: www.sesamestreet.org/autism which has a number of public service videos explaining the very individual differences that encompass the Autism Spectrum. These videos introduce us to several children and their families explaining the joys and struggles helping their children develop their capabilities. The videos do a great job explaining the diagnosis of Autism. By bringing us into the lives of several children on the spectrum they show us how each child with this diagnosis responds to the demands of their environment. These videos describe wonderful ways we can help children with their very “special needs”. These videos are not just about the children’s struggles but explain the demands of raising a child on the spectrum as parents, being a sibling and a friend points of view. It strikes me that if I were a parent who just found out my child was on the spectrum I would use these videos to start a dialogue with my family and friends about Autism and the many ways it can affect everyone in the child’s life. Thank you Sesame Street!
